And the Ultimate Irony award goes to.....

Obama wins!  And the walls of racism and prejudice and bigotry fall! And suddenly, we are all equal! And we all get to face the challenges of tomorrow together!

Unless, of course, you are gay. If you are gay, you don't get to be a 'person' or 'citizen', you get to be gay. Oh, you can pay taxes, and you can vote. But you can't get married. Not in this here State of California, no Sir!  California has to PROTECT (reserve) marriage from (for) gay (religious) people!

I feel sick. Prop 8 passed. A hate proposition, a proposition designed solely to ostricize a segment of our populace, was PASSED. In CALIFORNIA. I'm stunned. We voted for Change, for a Compassionate President, for a new start. Some Californians, on the same ballot, voted for repression and inequality.

Bigotry.

Of course, this will be struck down, if only because it violates the 14th amendment. You know, the one that guarantees equal rights for all, even if the power hungry and narrow minded (or too lazy to educate their kids about real world relationships) decide that the rights of all don't allow them to exert control over other people. For those too stupid or lazy to read anything other than books that preach control over values, here's the text:

Section 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

It can be confusing, but in a nutshell, it says you can't give one person something and then deny it to someone else because you don't like them. The 'due process of the law' part doesn't mean 'gather the larger majority to vote against them'.'

Of course, if you want to look at it as a human being and not a lawyer (or bigot), the union of two people is so important and so enabling emotionally that to deny someone the right of MARRIAGE because you think it's YOURS to define as you like is cruel. And selfish. And hateful. And devisive.

Amazing. So what next? So who's next on the hate ballot? Hard to hate via skin color now, kids. The Man is black. So who do you force to the back of the bus next?

I'm definitely against interracial marriage, but only because my white girlfriend keeps asking me when I'm going to propose to her.

Ever heard of separation of church and state - most pro 8 arguments relied on the "religious" concept of marriage. Maybe we should outlaw interracial marriage too? If prop 8 stands, it would only take a simple majority of voters.

Prop 8 will get struck down in the courts. I'm almost certain of it.
