Where is music going?

Written by GuitarHero on July 15, 2009

I've played in a lot of different bands over the years... Long enough to see that some styles and sounds come back around again.  it seems like devolution, but each time things come back around, they seem to be a little bit richer... A little more interesting, but drippng with deja-vu.

My question is... where are we now?  Hiphop has melted into the mainstream, merged with rock (and even country), losing some of its edge, but gaining a bigger audience.  Rock continues to "revolve" (my word for cyclic evolution), and it seems like we are hearing a lot of me-too artists out there, cloned by the AR executives that still have jobs, and by drones that think copying a popular sound or formula will bring them success.  Country has lost much of its twang, and the old "new" country seems like its more interested in pulling crossover listeners than staying true to its art form.

Is everything moving toward the MIDDLE?  YAWN!  Or are the artists that are truly on the edge of their craft getting lost in all the noise created by easy uploads; the kind of noise you get when anybody  can make their own recording and post it?  I'm hoping Dipdive can rescure cutting-edge musicians from the sea of noise.

Things may be moving to the middle now, but as music continues to "revolve", something must fill the void. It always does.

At the risk of tooting the horn of a relative, check out thpro.com, an independent production company and label my cousin runs. Some pretty fresh stuff.
