ARTE: Calendar JAN 2010

Written by MJP on January 3, 2010

Ok so I have decided to post a monthly calendar of Art openings/closings and events...this month is a work in progress but here are a couple things to start with.  Promise to add more international shows soon.  As I hear about things happening in the month I will add them so always check!

LOS ANGELES

Maya Schindler 'The Two Body Problem' Jan 2- 30

Maya is a Brooklyn based artist.  The poster like cut outs seem somewhat ethereal to me.  Her work displays a obvious message.  This is Maya's first solo exhibition at this gallery. The image to the right is from the show.

Jered Sprecher            Jan 9-Feb 13

Jered received the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship last year, which is no easy task.  If your a Jasper Johns/Joan Miro kind of art lover than you would enjoy this show.  Not saying his work is like either of those but I am saying they randomly come to mind instantly (even just for seconds) when I view his stuff.

Rip it Ip and Start Again

My first art job was at this non profit.  They're known for the quarky little art shows like this and 'Night of a 1000 Drawings'  I love artist space for staying around for as long as they have (well over 25 years) and for always pushing it with their somehow forward thinking.  Plus they really are Team Artist, hence the name Artist Space! (PS go to their website and play with the triangle)

Damien Hirst: End of an Era      Jan 30-Mar 6

Damien's show is most accurately titled.  He may not becoming to the end of an era with his career and relevance in the art world but the art generation he came from and was a student of is evolving fast...very fast.
