Written by MrDippy on January 9, 2009
Thursday night will.i.am accepted the "Outstanding Short Format Informational" award for the pro-Obama "Yes We Can" video that he co-produced. The award was honored at the first annual Global Media Awards, presented by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and the Consumer Electronics Association in Las Vegas.
The ground-breaking song and video has already been recognized with a Daytime Emmy Award for “Best New Approaches in Daytime Entertainment” and helped will.i.am to be named "Webby Artist of the Year" by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences Webby Awards.
In his acceptance speech, willi.am began "That song changed my life... that speech changed my life... technology has changed my life..."
Reflecting on how the video attracted over 4 million views in its first week, he said that "making a song that someone feels so inspired by to run to their loved ones and pass like a baton... that's powerful".
He continued to say that the technical tools for engagement have enabled this generation to "usher Obama to the White House..."
"This video cost little to nothing... it cost inspiration, people donating their time... and I'm proud of it," he concluded.
Consumer Electronics Association CEO Gary Shapiro presented Will.i.am with his award.
