Sinigang

Fact: Sinigang: Food historians have often extolled the wonders of sinigang, especially as a refreshing, energising, appetite-encouraging food for the humid tropics. The sour lightness of the soup is a perfect match for the oppressive tropical heat of the Philippine islands. While chicken/pork adobo is seen by most Filipinos as their national dish, sinigang, some historians argue, should be also considered, as it seems to be more indigenous to the Philippine islands than adobo, which has a somewhat vague colonial connection to Spain (note the word adobo is itself of Spanish origin).
I miss my family and my homeland and needed to fill myself up with some sinigang. I wish my mom was here to make it for me but I hit the kitchen and made some sinigang, all by my lonesome. The problem is that it does not taste like my mom’s recipe. I need ya’ all to help me with the secret ingredient to match my mom’s recipe. Send me your suggestions this way and I will doctor my recipe in hopes to take my blues away.
Peace!

you need tamarind mix (a whole lot of it if you want it sour) and PATIS (if you still remember what it is. hahaha.. fish sauce)

Re: Sinigang
Was just a new member so ......I 'm originally from the Phil...love sinigang and miss my mom's cooking as well....i guess Moms have that special touch huh?..........ok....in the absence of Mom...try this ....fresh sampalok (tamarind)..if you could get it. or camias....to make it really....."maasim" if not, i guess you can get dried, sampalok from the asian market.....not the powder one.....then mix it in the soup.....well, hopefully this will work for you and hence...take your blues away..;) ....good luck!....now got to go ...your making me crave for sinigang.....hehehhe! na-nga ngasim tuloy ako. hee ;)

I cook sinigang all the time. The ingredients are tamarind or knorr sinigang sa sampaloc mix which im sure you could find in Filipino stores or in China town; then there's onion, garlic, tomato, eggplant, radish, okra & kangkong. if you can't find all these ingredients sinigang mix + onion + garlic + tomato will do.
